Active Stretching

February 8, 2010

“When life asks you to move, do you have time to stretch? No,” says Tonya Martin, personal trainer and owner, Get Fit MAT Pilates. This simple, active stretch helps your body increase blood and oxygen circulation while strengthening ankles and increasing your range of movement.

With morning and evening mat classes, we have something that works with your busy schedule. Click here to find a class time that’s right for you.

Regular class schedule resumes Monday Jan. 11. And just because it’s a little chilly outside doesn’t mean you can’t get in that early afternoon walk. Spend 35 minutes a day, at least, walking, running, or biking and you’ll be ready when class starts up again.

Meantime, keep a few of these cold weather tips in mind before you brave the weather.

1. Give yourself plenty of daylight. The days are getting shorter, so plan to leave a little earlier than you usually would in the warmer months.
2. Dress in layers. Start with a thin layer of synthetic material such as polypropylene, which draws sweat away from your body. Next try fleece for insulation. Top this with a waterproof, breathable outer layer. To warm the air you breathe, wear a face mask or a scarf over your mouth. Remember to wear a hat and gloves, too.
3. Choose appropriate gear. If you’ll be outdoors when natural light is poor, wear reflective clothing. To stay steady on your feet, choose footwear with enough traction to prevent falls. Wear a helmet for skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling.
4. Remember sunscreen. Sunburn is possible even if you’re cold. You might want to wear lip balm, too.
5. Head into the wind. You’ll be less likely to get chilled on the way back if you end your workout — when you may be sweaty — with the wind at your back.
6. Drink plenty of fluids. Drink water or sports drinks before, during and after your workout — even if you’re not thirsty.

Go Local. And if you’re looking for a new place to stretch your winter legs, the City of Greensboro’s Parks and Rec Web site has a listing of local trails.

Go Triad. If you’re looking for some trails beyond the city’s limits, check out what the Triad area has to offer.
